May Online Book Club

Our online book club selection for May is here! If you missed our first post, you can check it out here.   Here are May’s three books from the middle years, high school and adult age ranges on our book lists, that are also available for download from the Winnipeg Public Library. Why not try a new book to get your students or family thinking globally?

Book lists for May: 

Middle Years (Gr. 5-8):  

Amal Unbound, by Aisha Saeed. Available online as an eBook from the Winnipeg Public Library.  

The compelling story of a girls fight to regain her life and dreams after being forced into indentured servitude. 

Highschool (Gr. 9-12): 

I Am Malala, by Malala Yousafzai. Available online as an eBook from the Winnipeg Public Library – please note, we recommend the Young Reader’s Edition where possible.  

When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Read the true story of Malala Yousafzai, who refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. 

Adult:  

City of Thorns: Nine Lives in the World’s Largest Refugee Camp, by Ben Rawlence. Available online as an eBook from the Winnipeg Public Library

With deep compassion and rare eloquence, Rawlence interweaves the stories of nine individuals to show what life is like in the Dadaab camp and to sketch the wider political forces that keep the refugees trapped there.
